Remember when "let me Google that for you" was a neat, although sarcastic, way of telling people that they could easily find information on the web if they took a moment to look for it?"Let me Google that for you" would now mean something like "let me relieve you of the burden of combing through an endless series of useless, spammy, ad-laden, malware-ridden, AI-generated websites in the vain hope of finding an answer to your question."

@bodhipaksa The problem is only going to amplify with the wide availability of LLMs. I see it at scale in product reviews (see Amazon), too. It's easy to spot, right?

@nhgeek Indeed. Things were already pretty spammy on Googles search results, but LLM's have certainly made things much, much worse. And the AI-fueled decline of the web has only just begun.

@bodhipaksa I wonder if we’ll see a stronger fork in the web. The Curated Web and the Corporate Hellscape web. The curate web is already out there, people just need to find it.

@nhgeek Yeah, it's the finding that's the problem. We need a good alternative to Google — something like Google used to be when it first launched.

@bodhipaksa @nhgeek I recommend Kagi. (Not affiliated, but very happy with what it does.) Free, less awesome alternative: Brave search.

@nhgeek In direct comparison with Kagi, SearXNG lacks relevant results, !bangs ;-) and a reliable fallback domain. A bunch of self-hosted servers is not reliable. @mvyrmnd @bodhipaksa

@tux0r @mvyrmnd @bodhipaksa I'm finding it to be fast, accurate, highly customizable and bangs work just fine for me (maybe I misunderstand what you say about those). The first thing I did was disable results from twitter, pinterest, buzzfeed, and instagram. Better already!

@tux0r @mvyrmnd @bodhipaksa user error, I think. The default command for that in searxng is !go or !google. If you run your own instance, it's easy to change this to !g, which I just did.

@tux0r @mvyrmnd @bodhipaksa yes, I can see I will make a project out of changing the defaults to the ddg standard ones. There's a settings.yml file, it is trivial to do.

@tux0r @mvyrmnd @bodhipaksa To address that concern, I generally advise folks to build their own images. It's not that hard. This approach is still preferred over running bare metal. Docker makes dependencies, maintenance and general running of servers So. Much. Easier. Bummer on the OpenBSD thing.
