It hadn't occured to me that some of you don't know* how things used to be different in coop or mmo or online team games.META? No one cared about that.Wasting time? That was why you were playing the game.Builds? What ever you feel like.Learning? Lol, figure it out as you go!These things only existed inside of try hard raiding communities and tournament settings. Which, were walled away, where no one could see them.Early mmos, were big, and empty, but if you ran across another player, you would stop and talk to each other. Sometimes you would team up to help each other with what ever was going on. Parties, and groups and guided formed naturally. And, there was so much respect. I can't even remember a single instance of someone being bullied to "play a more efficient build" or to learn how to do something. If you wiped, you wiped, it was a lot of fun. Team games were a little different, people would trickle into a room, and you would play with how ever many people showed up, and switch the teams up to try and balance them. If things were imbalanced, it was okay, it was just as much fun, to hold out against a superior force as it was to have a balanced match. Actually, it was more fun to have a challenge. In both team games and mmos, people would ALWAYS switch to the perceived weaker side. All that changed with automatic match making, MMR, and pro-streamers guiding "how to play."The reasons to play have been changed, fun has been re-quantified into "winning", you don't find friends, you insta-queue into a group where no one talks and you'll never see them again. And, people don't even know they are trapped in a toxic nightmare.

@hazlin Actually, when I play games these days, I make a point of forcing myself to try adding somr non-optimal gameplay. To explore, beautify etc. But... It's so fucking hard. :ayaya:

@hazlin My first MMO was Runescape and I definitely liked the social and economy elements in that game more than the actual combat. It's just that the people who kept playing the game, and were the most vocal seemed to be the tryhard pvm and pvp players, so that's what the developers focused on.FBmj1VGWUAEG75O.jfif

@hazlin Whenever those kinds of games have their official servers pulled, there's still some effort to preserve it, although it's gonna be filtered out because too many groups are sadly reliant upon Discord.

@Arkana I had some groups of online friends from the old days, but they eventually all come under the spell of "winning and being a try-hard is happiness". And, when they did, the groups broke and cracked and shattered into pieces. The first mmo I put lots of time into was SWG, but it was spared from this fate by being patched into oblivion and shutdown after being ruined by the devs xD> Stoner Zoner and de_dustSo many fun hours on dust2 and lila'panic. Counter Strike Source will always be best source xD

@hazlin i don't play MMOs for that very reason. why give me all these options if only a cerrain set is "the right one"? ironically Genshin was the closest i got to enjoying one because i never looked anything up, i just ran around and wasted time at my own pace.

@bleedingphoenix That is literally the only way to play anything. I feel like most current year gamers would melt down, at the thought of me spending over 300 hours in factorio without ever launching a rocket xD

@hazlin it's been my aversion to "content". my method has always been to play/watch something more than once and soak it in, learn more about it. that's mastery for me, so something that constantly changes just doesn't hold for me.

@bleedingphoenix > constantly changesFor some reason, applying change to existing games seems to ALWAYS make them worse.I'd put, overly balanced games in that same camp. The only games I've played that were solidly balanced, were only able to achieve it by making everything similar. Making a game balanced, no matter what you do, is just silly. With some of the later halo games, it meant all the guns felt like shit. For FF14 it makes all the classes feel like shit. For CS:GO it means that how the gun's feel change, (which has got to be the most anti 1.6 thing ever lol They literally devalue the skills their players build up.)

@hazlin And the smaller the game, the better the "community". My all time favorite was a little known game called TacticalOps (~2003-2004), where the community in Asia was literally a few dozen players and we all knew about each other and even their family situation, what they liked to do on their spare time and so on. Great Time!

@LukeAlmighty It helps a lot if you make up your own goals and rules for newer games :D (also with older games, lol it always helps.)Uhh, obviously this doesn't help much with newer MMOs, and team games. Something like FF14 is designed to prevent deviation in game play. And something like dota2 or overwatch, it is your fellow players that prevent you from finding a fun style to play.Choosing a lower difficulty while role playing a knight, with perma death, improves almost all games for me xD Suddenly I feel like reading all the text, evaluating the environment. Am I the good guy? Playing slowly and carefully is the most fun for me.
