@Br3nda @evan In the US, there is no legal reason why immigrants shouldn't be able to vote or serve in local government - just political inertia.

@dneary @Br3nda @evan I think it's mostly racism.Since I've become a citizen I've become more frustrated because first-past-the-post feels like trolling rather than actual democracy if you've grown up in a modern democracy.

@ian @Br3nda @evan I live in a state where, in theory, towns can vote to allow immigrants to vote ("Home Rule") - however, such votes need to be ratified by the State (the House, I think, although it might be the Secretary of State) to take effect, and they haven't been.

@evan non-citizen residents of 3 years (with tax paying) should get a vote in all elections, not just local government.Edit: that is to say, if you participate in and contribute to a society, you should have a say in that society. That's democracy, anything that limits participation to only citizens, limit's democracy.

@thisismissem Also, what's "citizenship"?Yeah-yeah, legally speaking, it's a stamp in a paper (in a system where everything is a fucking stamp in a paper). In real-world terms, though, at least in my book, if you live in, participate and contribute to some society, it pretty much makes you a citizen of that society, correct me if I'm wrong.@evan

@evan When I lived in the UK, I could vote in elections, it was actually the outcome of the 2015 general election that caused me to move to Berlin. In Germany & Berlin, especially, there's something like a quarter of the adult population can't vote because they're non-citizens and not EU-citizens. (Might have the number high). But think about that, is it really democracy if 25% of adults can't vote? Same goes with voter ID laws which suppress democracy.

@drq @evan true, but I'm following the typical states definition here, hence preferring the inclusive residents language over citizens

I'm not sure why so many people read this wrong.Apparently there are places where non-resident property owners can vote in municipal elections, which is apparently controversial. So people who are dealing with that might have jumped to the conclusion that this poll was about that issue. Also, "non-resident" is a more common term than "non-citizen", I think. So mentally people might have juxtaposed them.

Please read the question carefully! A lot of people are getting it wrong and expressing regret in the comments.Of course, the stakes are extremely low.
