i don't even especially like discord but if you don't understand the very common sense reasons why the vast majority of people prefers discord to IRC, i can't help you.

@Arcana @Moon i wish people would concentrate on the actual strengths and weaknesses of FOSS vs other software. For example, I think mumble really has the best voice chat, but it has one of the worst UIs. Telling everyone to 'git gud' won't make them use it.

@Arcana @lain commercial software iterates faster and has entire dedicated high quality UI people. Also sadly many foss project leaders are hostile to improving the interfaces for various reasons, I have run into this before. for example "it works good enough for me" "there's literally nothing wrong with it" "I don't care about getting more users" "I don't want to focus on non-essential features"

@Arcana @lain I will say that when you have a not-the-best UI person, they recommend cargo-cult UI changes which is irritating as hell.

@volpeon @lain how much of IRCv3 is supported? I looked at IRCv3 because it had a metadata feature that could be used for Discord-like functionality, but the metadata feature ended up being deprecated :-(

@lain honestly, fediverse is already far superior to anything discord will ever be, we just need proper selfhosted jitsi integration in fediverse instances especially in private chats, as well as full owncast streaming integration, so your home page will basically have your feed with a section for livestreams where they will preview like on twitch and a section for public voice chats that you can join, then in messages a voice chat with the ability to add multiple people in a private chat. if we can have this it would make the fediverse way more interesting. we already have all of these things but they are separated and need to be combined into a single place using only your fediverse account. and it should be easy to create more of these full suite instances.directory.owncast.online/

@Moon@shitposter.club @lain@lain.com IRCv3 has a lot of low-level specs that help with providing a modern UI. Most of them are variations of receiving notifications when something changes such as a user's online status, another spec adds message timestamps, and there are things like message tags and message batches that serve as a basis for high-level specs. I support most of these. As for high-level specs, I support chat history, a read marker, a typing indicator and message replies. I only need to add message reactions and the client is as modern as it can be. It looks like we won't get custom emojis or real avatars anytime soon. :akko_weary:

@Moon @Arcana @lain >commercial software iterates faster and has entire dedicated high quality UI people. That's the fun part isn't it, an individual team member on commercial software often gets paid orders of magnitude more than an entire FOSS project, yet people want random maintainers to step up and do non-critical things they don't enjoy nor see the purpose of, for no compensation beyond the privilege of having more screaming users complaining at them. And even when they do manage to rope in UX people like Tantacrul to sort things out, vocal users scream about breaches of trust.

@lain >People like discord because it's gratis, userfriendly and because there's already people on it>people want a platform where there's already people to discuss on>people who have already 10+ apps/software on their pc phone don't want to add a single one that isn't propritary that will be able to chat with youEeyup it's proprietary brain damage.

@guizzy yeah, I’m not even hating on IRC, I use it and appreciate it for what it is, but if you think you can tell someone “yeah this is much better than discord, it has no files, no message history, no voice, no video, no website, and you can use one of these 200 clients that look like windows 3.11 on steroids”, someone should slap you around with a large trout.

Yes and no. IMO the biggest weaknesses of Discord are not inherent to discord, but text chat as a whole. Mainly the biggest things I hate in modern chat apps are the way threads are handled, and if you're in a room with a lot of people, good luck getting a word in. But that's not discord specific at all, I have this problem on basically every chat app I use. I would love to get my friends on my own self hosted thing, I do hate using Discord for privacy reasons, but alas nobody else gives a fuck. So for one specific group of people I still have it around :sadcat:

@mischievoustomato @Arcana @Moon this might work. It’s a really hard problem. Probably the best way is to just have a regular company that does FOSS, but that comes with its own issues (like matrix being 100% dependent on state/military money)

@lain @mischievoustomato @Arcana @Moon The projects that avoid UI/UX issues best tend to be those dual model projects/companies that have a "community version" and "commercial version" of their software, but those have a hard time hitting the balance between not having any moat against an open source project forking them and making a free version of the features that actually pay for everything, and having the community version be so obviously crippled it's a demo.

@coolboymew @lain Tbh this is why XMPP's message carbons is the ideal form because it only begins at around 70 lines earlier, functioning more as short-term memory and not Total Archival. So it switches from contextlessly bursting the door open to gliding into the current conversation and the hour prior.
