@BrodieOnLinux It's most important to talk about this.Lemme tell you a story. Back in, it might be 2008ish i was already fully on linux, KDE 3.5 I think. I met someone online I liked, she was using Windows live messenger. I tried with Kopete, a multi messenger. It wasn't working all that well. To the point where I jumped in IRC and just threw all my anger at the devs. How crappy it is, how they can't even make the texting work, they pointed me to the bug tracker. That angered me even more. 🧵+

@BrodieOnLinux It took a few hours before a user that was in there as well just said the one line: "they provide this for free to you, as passionate work. Who are you to say such words?" And that was the moment where i realized this. That they are just normal people doing a normal hobby. Just like I ride my bike, they write code. I literally am not in any position to be upset with anyone in here. This moment is what i see over and over in the community. That's why it's so important to talk.

@BrodieOnLinux Many Linux users are lifeless individuals who want conflict and force their opinion on other. "You have to use KDE." "You have to use Arch." etc. There isn't really a solution for this other than telling every toxic community member to do something with their lives lol

@BrodieOnLinux It gets harder and harder to watch this as the video goes on, and I don't mean in a sympathetic way.GNOME is the famous target, so I'll target them famously: you've got a project constantly helmed/represented by the world's most megalomaniac Malevolent Dictators For Life (de Icaza, ebussy, etm.), constantly cutting features that people want, constantly undermining people asking for feature requests (I don't see the use case in thumbnails in the file picker *WONTFIX*), constantly redesigning the wheel in spite of the fact that these problems have already been solved in Windows/macOS/AND EVEN EARLIER LIKE TWENTY YEARS AGO, and then have the GALL, the NERVE, the HUTZPAH, to tell me that I need to be more appreciative of their work. Moreover, they're backed by the company who treats their products as official, because they produce The Linux(R) Desktop(tm), proper noun, all capital letters, postpended with a registered trademark, which entrenches developers in their opinion that "yeah, we're right, you're wrong, shut the fuck up and start sucking my dick."Like what's the average dickhead going to say? "I don't like GNOME." Okay, well now you yourself have to reimplement and maintain everything that dozens of engineers maintain BY YOURSELF. "I don't like GTK." Well now you have to maintain your own toolkit AND port all of the libraries and programs you use over to it. "I don't like wayland." Now you do what you did with the toolkit and multiply it times a hundred. The MDFLs aforementioned have more money, time, and resources than you do, and you have to make dinner and clean the house before work restarts tomorrow. So no wonder the shitty projects have more backing and funding than some random guy's project. The complexity went up orders of magnitude, people gave up, got bitter, and started treating the developers that remain in kind. The relationship between user and developer is, in fact, a relationship. Relationships cut both ways. You want a change in culture? Come to the table and start compromising.

@BrodieOnLinux Moreover, there's this feeling I get where the comparative Bazaar kept looking at what the Cathedrals of the world had and asked "How come I don't get to be pope?" So they paved over the Bazaar, started building their own Cathedral, and nothing's coming along to replace it. ESR wasn't a very good developer, but I think about the ramifications of that essay a lot.Things keep getting worse and people get surprised when nobody gets happier or more optimistic..

@idiot @BrodieOnLinux I think Microsoft took a bulldozer to Linux in many ways, and then Linux tried to play on their turf which gives you those "Benevolent dictators for life" type of roles because somebody has to make sure linux isn't absorbed or out-innovated by Microsoft's humongous, dumb, mostly rich, user base.

@jbschirtzinger @BrodieOnLinux Kinda true but painting with too broad of strokes. BDFL-type roles predate Microsoft  Linux: look at Slackware and how consistent leadership has been for the last few decades. Some Benevolent Dictators go Malevolent. Some get into the Dictator business for the wrong reasons. Hopefully random literal-who GNOME guy is right and the money dries up so Microsoft fucks off, but I don't think it's fair to blame Microsoft for everything.

@idiot @BrodieOnLinux Well there we disagree. Get rid of Microsoft and you get rid of whole lot of technology/political issues.

@jbschirtzinger @BrodieOnLinux >whole lot ofYeah but not all. Not disagreeing with Microsoft being bad, but there's plenty of issues discounting them, and if they disappeared tomorrow, the vacuum would be filled by someone else.

@idiot @BrodieOnLinux An attempt would be made, but the reality is Microsoft was allowed to do what it did because it is perfidious.
