I understand and appreciate the ethical issues with wearing leather. However, I've worn the same jacket for 25 years and the same boots for 6 years. There's nothing else I'm aware of that will last so long if well maintained.

@feonixrift You know it. That leaves, what, wool? (Same issues as leather, but less drastic.) Cotton? Resource intensive to make, and a tiny fraction of the usable lifetime.In a sea of imperfect choices, I think long-kept leather items are a perfectly defensible option.

Because asked, this is said 25 year old leather jacket. At this point it's flexible and soft as a glove. I have no doubt it’ll last longer than me.While I'm on the subject of taking care of your stuff, please learn to repair your clothes or find a good local tailor. I ripped the inner liner before, and the nice lady around the block fixed it right up for me. Buy shoes you can re-sole. Get quality clothes you can mend. These things are more expensive once, but then you can keep them for years.

@pagrus That's a completely reasonable middle ground. I expect the leather things I have now to last many more years, so I can defer that decision for a long time to come.

@pagrus That's a good call out. If if the price per expected year of usage is similar, it's a no brainer. As long as it's not freakishly more expensive over time, looks tolerable, and wears comfortably, I’ll be in line next to you.
