       I’m running through the “Personal Voice” setup in macOS 17. I’m fully prepared to be horrified at a computer trying to sound like me. I mean, one’s enough to go around.

       @elfin Mrs Tek has a working theory that computers are afraid of me, and that’s why they do what I tell them when they won’t work well for others.If my computer could pick up that skill, I’d be a mix of proud and terrified.

       @tek I'm actually known for waving one of my screwdrivers at an errant machine with the words, "I will strip you down and rebuild you from scratch...go ahead and keep it up." And they work after a power cycle (which had been tried.I've done it in a Data Center after building 100 identical machines and there's always three with..."Personality".My workmates were in awe.Me: I'm the Boss, they're calculators. They need to be taught.Once I stripped one in front of the others. Problem solved.

       @elfin Are you me?I told a recalcitrant server it was about to FAFO, and I’m going to get a wire cutter and a soldering iron, and that was the end of the problems.Intellectually, I don’t believe a bit of it. Spiritually, I’m completely convinced.

       @tek Yup. I have Zero intellectual ability to ratify or explain How it works, but I know it works.Machines have personalities. Sometimes one has to appeal to their sense of self-preservation.Works on automobiles as well.

       @tek Blew a head gasket in a Ford Ranger in Donner Pass driving my mother and the dog back to Indianapolis.I payed for 2000mi ( not much for religion or gods ) for that engine to keep going.(Also got busted for doing 115mph in a 55 outside of Peoria, another story).I was leaking three quarts of 50 weight oil a day. I begged and purred and said it was a Good Truck. Damned if it didn't get us to Indy, and absolutely abruptly died.

       @tek who in their right mind wants an assistant, a subordinate, to sound just like them? i can imagine it mocking you in your own voice, "ooooohhhh, I like open source oooooh... nananana" otoh, i wonder how Keeva and Pollito will react to the computer saying something in your voice to them from a TTS script.
