"Any long running #TV series eventually has a wild west episode". Dr who, red dwarf, star trek, family guy, etc. Is there a name for this rule?

@simon It does look like the folks at TV Tropes have picked up on that, they call it “Cowboy Episode”.

@simon Yes, it doesn’t always work, my theory (having seen some older Star Trek episodes do similar episodes, was the availability of Old West sets, but would UK shows have had those kinds of sets lying around? Very strange.

@rouseworld @simon Goddenbery called it the 'Parrallel Worlds concept' in the pitch for Star Trek. 'The "Parallel Worlds" concept makes production practical by permitting action-adventure science fiction at a practical budget figure via the use of available "earth" casting, sets, locations, costuming, and so on."http://leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Star_Trek/1_Original_Series/Star_Trek_Pitch.pdf

@penguin42 @simon Thanks, I guess I had either assumed that was the case or heard second-hand, but it is neat to see the source document.
