I prefer Schrader valves, and when I get a new bike or wheel I've asked the LBS to drill out the Presta-sized valve holes. Easily done, takes just a minute. But I thought I should note here that when I got a new wheel a couple weeks ago, this wasn't necessary because it came with Schrader-sized holes and a little rubber insert narrowing them for Presta stems. Reports of Schrader's death have been greatly exaggerated!

@jef Huh, Schrader is quite common here on a lot of bikes. The split seems to be between high pressure race/road bikes and wheels versus lower pressure commuter, hybrid, and I think a lot of mountain bikes. My bikes have always been Schrader, including the touring bike (which came with 700c x 35 tires). I think wheels (and rims) with Schrader sized holes are widely available.(My understanding is that Presta will hold high pressures better because it can be sealed relatively tight.)

@cks @jef as the family caretaker of bikes, it honestly drives me crazy as I think our bikes are 50/50 presta/Schrader."Can you pump up my tires, please?"

@SeismoAllegra @jef The better bike pumps around here all seem to be double-headed (able to work with either), although you have to realize which opening you need or flip some rubber bit around (depending on the pump). I'm always glad that I'm completely Schraeder, though.
