So, correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m going to go out here on a limb and say that it *seems to me* that the majority of good faith #bsky criticism of the vibe on mastodon, calling it “stuffy” and “no fun”, comes from people who joined mastodon.social, after complaining loudly that there was no default instance to quickly onboard people to the new service. So like, the irony, I guess, is what hit me this morning.

Cuz I was trying to square up how this very common criticism of mastodon was so hard for me to see in my experience. My first month or so here, I participated in an hours long alliteration thread with @RL_Dane and @benjaminhollon, among other contributors. It was very silly and not at all serious. That’s been the norm for me, people wanting to do fun stuff and normal stuff and silly stuff and serious stuff all together.

And then it hit me that I don’t follow or really know hardly anyone from one of the massive “default” or “catch all” instances, and the irony of a group of people poo-pooing decentralization as a feature, who thought it was too complicated to go and find an instance that they might gel with a bit more than mastodon.social, then conflating all of mastodon with a small subset of it *in a federated service* just smacked me in the head.

I would call it a failure of communication, on our part, if I didn’t see loud and constant communication along this line, particularly during the winter when so many new people were here. I’m reluctant to just say “you get out of this process what you put in”, because that’s dismissive of people’s real concerns, but that’s kind of where I’ve landed?

What I know for sure is that I’m happy to have found #Fosstodon and the community here, and I’m very thankful to @mike and @kev and the whole moderation team for making MY mastodon onboarding experience one of the highlights of my year. I think you’ve done something right here.

@spaceraser @mike @kev I chose #Fosstodon initially because I do build open source, research software. But I mostly post about my radio program, societal issues and photography, so I have wondered if I'm supposed to relocate. But I contribute my $8/month and love it here.

@fullyabstract No need to relocate. No one in our community is one dimensional, and we have no expectation for them to be. @spaceraser @kev

@mike @fullyabstract +1 absolutely not. This would be a very boring place if everyone only posted about OSS alone. Look back through my posts, I rarely post about OSS these days.@spaceraser

@kev @mike @fullyabstract @spaceraser The charter of an instance should perhaps be intended more as a set of shared values than a list of guidelines on what topics to post about.

@amoroso @spaceraser @fullyabstract @mike @kev Indeed. But that’s a problem for #Fosstodon. Fosstodon is forcing people to execute non-free software, so they’re a bit falsely positioned. Fosstodon /users/ are not necessarily hypocritical, since it’s somewhat normal for a FOSS dev/user to also be a user or dev of proprietary software. But the fosstodon instance itself should not be forcing people to run non-free software.

@batalanto What non-free software is Fosstodon forcing people to execute? The 'view source code' on fosstodon.org points to Microsoft, and todon.nl's 'view source code' points to Microsoft too - this is a known #TyrannyOfConvenience bug [1]; framapiaf.org does *not* point to MS.@amoroso @spaceraser @fullyabstract @mike @kev [1] https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/22572
