In consultation with my doctor, I have decided that after 3 years I'd like to see what life is like without antidepressants. I am on 20mg Citalopram (an SSRI). We will very slowly lower the dose. Does anyone have experience with quitting antidepressants? What withdrawal symptoms can I expect? Any information or advice is welcome! Thanks ๐Ÿ’›#mentalhealth #depression #anxiety #medication #psychology #question #joinin

@Krisss Kris, everybody is different - but talk to your pharmacist. they have more training in drug effects than your doctor, and will probably be able to tell you what to watch for, and what to expect better than anybody.I don't have experience with Citalopram (other than to know that my body doesn't like it), but most other SSRI can take 2-4 weeks to leave your system entirely.

@Krisss I just switched from that same drug/dose, and switched to Escitalopram. I went from 20mg to 10mg for 10 days. I didn't have brain zaps the way I did when I went off Cymbalta, but I did get very moody, cranky, and generally emotional. It was hard, and I was glad to go back on a new med. Good luck with it, I know it's totally different for every individual!

@Krisss I went off a rather high dose of Venlafaxine years back. Everyone is different, so I would keep talking to your doctor as you go through of course. For me, best I remember I would have tremors. I would feel ocassional... shocks? Like a small electric shock type feeling? I would also get headaches pretty often and my mind would feel like it was racing, where I was struggling to keep my chain of thought. Mostly was fine after a month or so.

@Krisss An excellent goal! Glad you are working with your MD for this. The emphasis on โ€œvery slow taperโ€ is key.You may feel uncomfortable (this means different things for each person) as you lower the dose. Could be nausea, headache, dizziness, etc.The more gradual the taper, the better. Be patient. You can do this!#Deprescribing

@Krisss I quit 10mg Citalopram recently. Had the weird head shocks and amorphous "flu like symptoms".I'm still trying to work out if I like life better without them.

@Krisss Expect to feel all the emotions. I cried a lot for all kinds of reasons, good bad indifferent. I was angry because the breeze blew. Happy because I could actually feel something. Sad because even though I had been "stable" for a number of years, I realized how much I missed out on and how flat I had been.

@Krisss Having watched a family member attempt the same thing, effectively weening off, what had been classed as maintenance dose for 5yrs....Be extremely cautious..., not so much the physical effects of reducing the dose, but the chances of falling back to a place you don't want to be.....As already mentioned, a pharmacist can be a good source of advice to begin with....Hope all goes well ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป
