Some notes about the #Nashville shooting for #trans allies:The shooter was a trans man. Not a "female shooter" as is being reported. He's an evil terrorist who doesn't deserve any respect, but there's no way to misgender one trans person without misgendering all of us.Don't share his name (this goes for every shooter; they *want* to be known for what they've done), and don't share his deadname either (which is what I'm seeing vastly more often).1/5

If the police release the shooter's manifesto, don't share it. (Again, this goes for every shooter.) But considering how the school was Christian and the shooter was a former student there, it's likely that his goal was to get revenge for the experience he had there. This was a horrific act of terrorism, and the goal does not change that and shouldn't come into discussions about it. But transphobes are gonna bring the goal into it either way.2/5

The experience of trans children at most Christian schools is a serious issue that has hurt many people, and anger about it from the trans community is understandable and shouldn't be minimized. But the shooter is *not* an example of this collective anger—because other trans people are not evil terrorists. So when transphobes try to draw an equivalence, this crucial difference needs to be emphasized. Trans people are *not* advocating for terrorism.3/5

This isn't the first terrorist attack that's been motivated by a genuinely serious issue. Going by past examples, one common narrative is gonna be "pro-trans activism and anti-Christian sentiment are what caused this".And that's false. What caused it was the *guns*. Just like every other mass shooting. They're also gonna try to use this to claim trans people are mentally unstable. But crucially, the rest of us *haven't* done mass shootings.4/5

So ultimately:Don't defend the shooter in any way. Don't say that he had a point or that his motivation was understandable. But don't minimize how trans people are mistreated in Christian schools. It is a genuine issue. But people advocating for change here are *not* advocating for terrorism. And don't misgender or deadname the shooter. Any act of misgendering or deadnaming is an attack on all trans people. And the rest of us deserve better than that.5/5

Trans aren’t mistreated in Christian schools. They are told the truth. They are either make or female. Simple
