If Meta is really working on a new ActivityPub-powered social network, I see it as a very positive signal overall--my personal feelings towards Meta notwithstanding. For one, it's validation for our entire ecosystem from the biggest player. It also tells me that they don't see themselves as strong enough to keep users locked inside their walled garden anymore. It means the tide is really turning for interoperable social media, and that's always been the goal.

@Gargron Yeah, I do have a bit of worry in terms of culture and good old Embrace Extend Extinguish (not a strong one though, I don't think people would leave OG Fediverse to Meta, more like the other way around really). At least I would very much welcome tearing the wall of Facebook down.

@lanodan @Gargron remember when Google supported XMPP? It did change the reputation of XMPP from positive to negative, when they were slowly killing XMPP support. And it wasn't a technical problem that Google's support for it was incomplete, they just didn't care enough.

@Gargron Meta has very bad year right now. They loose a lot of audience, and loose money from advertisers. Stocks are going down.Their attempts to pull users into VR failed, and they came up with another hype topic - decentralization.I bet that they will try to suck in all the user info from all instances, make up some profiles for everyone and show ads as posts.I officially declare, that when I will hear about start of their instance, I will block it on mine immediately.Privacy of my users is more valuable than Meta's audience.

@a1ba @Gargron IIRC what Google did is make people migrate en masse to Google Talk, for various reasons but a lot of them even made technical sense due to XMPP's pretty poor interoperability on almost all levels and the particular case of VoIP being an horrible pain to get working thanks to NAT.Meanwhile in this particular case:- I don't believe People won't move to Facebook's servers- Facebook has been leaking users for the past years, so I believe people *will* leave Facebook, specially if they can still contact some people after migrating to the other side- The fediverse bootstrapped itself / works standalone, it's not the extraneous network like it was in GnuSocial era where basically everyone had accounts on a bigger network

@lanodan @Gargron I want to believe that, but so far, it sounds like EEE. When they will have enough of AP and federation quirks, they will just silently kill it, killing social connections as well. Also Facebook is ultra censored, I don't think they just fit here.

@a1ba @Gargron Censorship is a funny one because if you look at the fediverse, people leave instances with too much restrictions (or not enough). It's going to be a cultural mess, that's for sure but we have pretty good moderation and curation tools on the fediverse side of things and some instances that will probably annoy the shit out of facebook. As for EEE, I think it's actually not the right one, the amount of features and stuff doesn't matters much, at least beyond techies. What matters is which is hype / has wind in their sails, and facebook is a ship lost at sea.

@fcktheworld587 @Gargron I agree. It's profoundly naive to suggest they don't see themselves as strong, and Twitter did fine keeping people in a walled garden until Musk came along. If Gargron wants to be an alternative he needs to *do* something about scale instead of just getting excited over Murdoch owned newspapers signing up. Meta, et all, has 500x the resources than one non profit in Germany does.

@Gargron From experience I can tell you the Facebook playbook: 1) Tightly embrace and clone the latest new thing2) Reach out to the people who've been key in building/supporting that new thing with attractive partnerships to gain their support, trust and endorsement3) Abruptly pull support from those same people when either a) the current new thing is under their control or b) the next new thing arrivesI've seen these movies too many times and the sequels keep getting worse.

@Gargron I agree with this assessment, but this is also a huge threat to fedi. After all, same things could have been said about XMPP back in the day when Google Talk and Facebook Messenger both used it!We *have to* learn that lesson and proceed with an abundance of caution. Meta would not be doing this if they didn't think they can somehow "own" and control the resulting ecosystem in some critically important way.

@victoriadecapua @fcktheworld587 @Gargron More instances would help. Perhaps easing restrictions on which instances are publicly listed. While I understand & appreciate an instance having daily backups, adding daily backups to my very small instance increases operating costs by about 60%. I can't justify that until I have a larger user base, but I can't get a larger user base without being officially listed, which I need daily backups for. >>

@victoriadecapua @fcktheworld587 @Gargron Is there a way to list all instances that wish to be listed, but perhaps give them a rating of some kind? Gold instances have daily backups, multiple admins, & other such perks, silver instances have weekly backups, one admin, & other perks, bronze has maybe monthly backups with few other perks, then unrated. Letting them all be listed & leaving choice to the user strengthens the fediverse, IMO.

@Gargron my hopes are that it doesn't become another corporate take over.Mastodon and XMPP are not controlled by corporations and I pray to the gods that the 2 platforms are stepping it up to keep *them* from taking over.At one time, back when the internet was a true system not controlled by corporate, a Jabber server could connect to all platforms (gtalk, yahoo, aol, Facebook messenger, Twitter) Now?!?!Stop it before it happens, I beg you all.
