Some people say, "Mastodon is where it's at on the Fediverse."But really, it's the opposite: the Fediverse is where it's at on Mastodon. Without the Fediverse, Mastodon becomes CounterSocial. Or worse, Truth Social.

What most things people perceive as "the Mastodon social network" is actually the Fediverse. However, you can use Mastodon without the Fediverse. It's just incredibly silly to do that.

There's a problem with building apps with *only* Mastodon in mind:1. It ignores the intended interoperability of the Fediverse2. It gives potential back door access to unfederated (or de-federated) social networks that use Mastodon—many which would never get approved by Apple if they created their own appsSo while I understand why developers target Mastodon *first*, it's a mistake to not consider the greater Fediverse in mind.

@atomicpoet mate, I think you speak a little too early. Mastodon is where all right now. In future all can change and devs will follow this changes. For now, I think you speak about a problem too early

@TrueSnowBuddy I guarantee that, every day, you interact with people on the Fediverse who don't use Mastodon. It just "looks" like Mastodon to you because that's the magic of ActivityPub.

@atomicpoet and you choose to use free open-source software and not support devs, but ask them to make all features that you want. It’s little bit unfair don’t you think so? But for now all people need time and recourses to work. If you support developers with money I’ll say sorry and apologize.

@atomicpoet The Fediverse reminds me of the IRC. It was a little confusing at first, but I asked many questions and people were kind enough to answer. There are so many options!

Case in point: Toshik, I run a small instance. I use Akkoma instead of Mastodon because Akkoma is more featureful, is way cheaper to host, and scales better in many ways.@atomicpoet@TrueSnowBuddy

@ML2 @atomicpoet but you clearly can connect with other it’s good. Availability to use your insurance with different clients it’s good too for you and for me, because i can interact with you.But think of availability of all different kind of instances on day one of launch it’s like not so realistic. For future I hope all the devs bill support this feature of course

@TrueSnowBuddyFair. And to the credit of Ivory they do seem to be interested in supporting other Fediverse apps, if I have read them correctly.Still, the difference between Mastodon and Fediverse is something I want to make sure isn't forgotten at any point.@atomicpoet

@TrueSnowBuddy @ML2 That's the point of the Fediverse: interoperability across social media. You, as a Mastodon user, should be able to talk to an Akkoma or Calckey user. Same deal with Mastodon apps. They should talk to users that aren't on Mastodon.
