an item should never be placed in a players inventory until after its model in the world despawns. if it counts as collected prior to this then it is the systems designers who are wrong not the animators.

and no not updating the inventory GUI is not an acceptable alternative. Hiding information from the player is not a good idea.

if this means items can be lost or not collected if a play triggers a transition let it happen. This is a useful trick for players doing minimalist runs.

@Rasp I don't know if it pays to be this rigid about minutia. I can think of one or two examples where stalling the back end addition can be catastrophic if something goes wrong during the animation.

@Rasp Take the power cells from Jak And Daxter. If there's a power cut, or your console freezes, or just anything goes wrong during the animation, and that collectable was at the end of a particularly tough gauntlet... From a UX perspective, that is an incredible pain point. Rather bank and save that info just in case so you don't lose a player because you robbed them of something they worked very hard to get.

@mdstevens0612 then you need either no animation or to save immediately after the animation finishes. plus its just as likely the power out will happen seconds before they enter pickup range.

@Rasp Those animations are incredibly iconic, that's a hill you can die on alone. Who the player is mad at makes a difference. Mad at their municipality? They might come back. Mad at the developer? That game's getting shelved.Best to be flexible. When appropriate, bank data after an animation, when not, bank before.

@mdstevens0612 are we talking about animations were you have player control or not? Because I was mostly talking about animation while control is in the players hands. like common bolts in ratchet and clank kind of thing.

@Rasp ideally the model should never despawn and instead move straight to its place in the inventory or to the button that opens it

@ro I mean if you don't remove the models they they'd just pile up on the player character where their animation ended. while that would be kinda funny it would look really dumb.

@ro I mean more games that have a pick up radius and add things to inventory before they even reach the player so they're legally counted as collected before they reach the player.
