Can't find video so.... I'm gonna try and FOIA it. At a minimum, what he told cops on scene would be on a bodycam...

@graf @r000t Depends on how much time it takes to process the request. You CAN get teh fees waived if you can demonstrate a pressing public need, but they always reject that shit because FedGov doesn't give a shit about the public or what it needs. Average fees are, yeah, about 50$ American, but can be as little as 20$ or even over 250$.

@graf It Depends. A "reasonable" number of pages are free, and that number is codified in some state FOIA laws. Obviously, digital copies aren't gonna be subject to per-page charges. It's *possible* to be charged for the time spent hunting down records, or for the time spent going over all of them making sure nothing needs to be redacted. The cost can be waived if you can demonstrate that there is a public interest in the material being released. That said, a Florida sheriff's office once demanded $20 for 1 (one) police report, for a nationally-covered incident where a cop planted drugs on video. I've issued requests like "a list of all police calls to this address between these dates", "all police reports pertaining to a Mr. Bob Nuckinfutz", "complete report, narratives, bodycam footage, and any other media tendered to your office in regards to incident #####" and haven't had to pay a dime. You do not need to use a service to file these requests. There is usually a dedicated employee or even entire department for fielding records requests.

@dizzy @Senator @graf If I ask for a single police report, and it's 24 pages of just text, I'll be given those pages binder-clipped together, no charge. If I want every picture taken of a scene, and a copy of all videos they were given, I'll be charged for color printouts and/or a DVD. Almost everything can be given to you digitally now, especially since that's how it's stored anyway. I've yet to be charged for a FOIA request that was fulfilled digitally. If there's public interest in the information being released, you can ask that the fee be waived. They can tell you to fuck off, and then you can appeal it to some government office.

@dizzy @Senator @graf Some other tips btw:1) The police department almost never has 9-1-1 recordings, that's usually handled at the county level. That office will have their own FOIA officer. 2) It helps to explicitly list all of the types of things they could possibly have, instead of just "All records pertaining to X". I usually add "This would include, but isn't limited to, incident reports, police narratives, 9-1-1 call recordings, dispatch radio recordings/transcriptions, CAD tickets, police body camera footage, surveillance/CCTV footage, and any other images, documents, videos, sounds, or other media created by or tendered to your agency in regards to this incident."3) You can perform multiple requests, to do things like get a list of calls to a place, and all of their report numbers, and then follow up for everything regarding those report numbers4) Call and radio recordings aren't kept around for as long as you think, I've seen retention times as short as 90 days. I would imagine bodycam footage is also expired quickly. Act fast if you want anything that can't be put in a PDF.

       >Town population: 2,500>Number of officers: 6I don't think I'm getting bodycam footage. Just a guess. They likely don't even know such things exist.
