watching the end of evil dead 2 has made me think...if you were suddenly transported to the european middle ages, what would be the most advanced technology you could explain to them and get them to build? guns? trains?

i guess needing to know how to smelt steel would be important in creating a train. did they know how to do that back then? idk honestly. i feel like explaining the concept of the steam engine would be much easier than them actually trying to build it

@mushroom_soup You would have to spend like 20-50 years working with forge masters and blacksmiths to get steel right before you could even start with guns or trains. Unless you wanted to potentially die from boiler/musket barrel explosions. There’s a reason why gunpowder existed for like a thousand years before the first handheld muskets became practical or why Herod of Alexandria invented the first rudimentary steam engine in the pre Christian Era but trains didn’t become a thing until the 1700s.

@mushroom_soup Basic Plastics may actually be easier than steel since they all knew about naphtha and primitive petroleum products and they knew about distillation. But mass production would be a much harder problem.

@mushroom_soup @Pon Plastic is gay. But I think some of the very high grade engineering grade plastics could be machined into parts yeah. No idea how long it would work though, it’s probably way more expensive than metal too

@mushroom_soup You can make cannons with very thick barrels but for a gun you can carry in your hands iron barrels forged with like 14th medieval iron are very likely to explode in your hands. It’s why crossbows out performed firearms for infantry combat until like mid 17th century from what I can recall.

@mushroom_soup @Pon They're usually made of cast iron or bronze. But there size with the iron is what makes the difference. I guess you could make a gun out of iron but it would be extremely heavy and cumbersome since the barrel would need to be several inches thick to handle the strain of the explosion. I mean you could hollow a thin hole through a log and it would hold up for awhile but if you could aim and carry it is another thing

@mushroom_soup Cannons were in Eurasia in the 14th century but because of the materials used they tended to have a short working life, also since they were front loaded they had a slower fire rate than catapults and trebuchet by a pretty big margin. Mortars actually were more useful than cannons at the start because the cannons they had often struggled to penetrate 10ft plus thick castle walls. Cannons didn’t really hit their stride until the period around the napoleonic conflict same with guns actually. There were blunderbusses and such much earlier but they were inaccurate prone to exploding and also really expensive to build and they had lower range than most long bows and a lot of bigger crossbows.

@mushroom_soup @Turdicus Basically if you could teach your medieval fiefdom to wash their hands after shitting and before eating, to quickly bury the dead and to use basic plumbing and wastewater management to avoid diphtheria and typhus epidemics over the course of like 50 years you would probably massively outperform all your rivals.

@mushroom_soup @Turdicus Yeah and it would likely spark an enlightenment era a couple hundred years early. Economic and social stability is basically the one precondition needed to get people to start working on like legalism rationalism and empyricism. It’s just that it took a lot of trial and error over a long time before Europe got to that starting point for modernism.

@SwattySquad @mushroom_soup @Pon I'd probably go with sanitation and the development of penicillin. With the number of people who died to plagues and preventable illnesses, having those concepts hundreds of years early would be enough to change human history and how quickly we advanced

@clairebere @SwattySquad @mushroom_soup Yeah but if I was the one traveled back in time or isekaied, I have no idea how they make penicillin except that it’s a compound found in bread mold so I doubt I’d be able to get that to work. I think it’d probably be possible given the sort of laboratory glass that like alchemist \ apothecary types had back then but I’m not sure.

@Pon @clairebere @SwattySquad "Many ancient cultures, including those in Egypt, Greece and India, independently discovered the useful properties of fungi and plants in treating infection.[9] These treatments often worked because many organisms, including many species of mould, naturally produce antibiotic substances. However, ancient practitioners could not precisely identify or isolate the active components in these organisms. In 17th-century Poland, wet bread was mixed with spider webs (which often contained fungal spores) to treat wounds. The technique was mentioned by Henryk Sienkiewicz in his 1884 book With Fire and Sword.[10] In England in 1640, the idea of using mould as a form of medical treatment was recorded by apothecaries such as John Parkinson, King's Herbarian, who advocated the use of mould in his book on pharmacology.[11]"This is very interesting

@Pon @SwattySquad @clairebere "The first clear reference to smallpox inoculation was made by the Chinese author Wan Quan (1499–1582) in his Douzhen xinfa (痘疹心法) published in 1549.[63] Inoculation for smallpox does not appear to have been widespread in China until the reign era of the Longqing Emperor (r. 1567–1572) during the Ming Dynasty.[64] In China, powdered smallpox scabs were blown up the noses of the healthy. The patients would then develop a mild case of the disease and from then on were immune to it."The Chinese really did just discover everything like 500 years before the rest of the world did

@mushroom_soup @SwattySquad @clairebere That is wild I had no idea they were inoculating people so long ago, shouldn’t be surprised though Chinese history is really crazy they came really really close to reaching enlightenment era level scientific thought in like 200 BC with the Shang had all the ingredients but couldn’t quite nail things down and then when the empire fell people who believed in magic took over and things started to fall apart again.
