I know I did the same during the one really notable long term relationship I've fallen into (everything else has been more like flings), but I felt bad about it afterwards and probably there has to be a way to strike a healthier balance. It's really not good in cases like his where the other side still gets to keep much of their old life still.

Good question. I think he was complacent in it by being so easily influenced by others, especially incredibly mediocre women. I think the real problem will be that after their kid and the excitement of life together dying down, there's no way she's getting any thinner or nicer looking than she was at the start (which already wasn't great). I don't know if he'll have the ability to stick with it if she grows more demanding on top of that, which she probably will. Guess if he puts up with all of that, it's his own just desserts.
