@Tay0 In the bigger instances, the local feed is just a pared down version of the fed. Speaking personally, my Home feed definitely takes second to the local feed here on #Fosstodon, but Fosstodon has an amazing community. The people on mastodon.social are so varied in basically everything that the local feed loses its relevance.

@MorphicOne So the way Mastodon works (and many other similar services) is kind of like email. There's a whole lot of Mastodon servers (called instances) out there. Each one of those instances is capable of acting on it's own, and the software is open source and freely available. Those instances connect to each other like a giant fishing net, so there is no "main" instance. Each is as important as the next. This net is called the Fediverse (Fed for short). Fosstodon and Koyu are 1/@Tay0

@MorphicOne both Mastodon instances in the Fed. They both can potentially see the same information in the Fed, but they're controlled by different people and may have different rules. Fosstodon is specifically for fans of free and open source software, so that's a requirement of being a member of our community. Because of that, our local feed is made up of some really interesting and amazing stuff relating to Free software. The local feed is ONLY posts that are made on Fosstodon. 2/@Tay0

@mike @Tay0 - I was able to gather that much. but it seems like you have more sort of accessibility if you will to the people on your own server. same as you would more likely know your neighbours than people living in another city

@MorphicOneWell, we're focused on FOSS and most everyone on Fosstodon works in FOSS, in IT, are Devs or engineers of some sort. That makes a community with very similar interests and that probably makes us a closer instance than you'll find elsewhere.I guess if you sign up, look at our local feed and see if it suits you better than where you are now.@mike

@LambLeeg mastodon.social has become a sorta default instance because the guy that runs it is the original developer of the Mastodon software. I think it was also the first instance because of that.@Tay0
