       Question from a #newbie about #Fosstodon and the way #Mastodon works. I signed up here because there's a #CoC that I like.  However I noticed just now that it prohibits posting in languages other than English. I do want to post in French my mother tongue once in a while. Does that mean I need a separate account on another instance? Can I even use this account to post elsewhere ? What's my best approach?

       @Cleoqc Hi, so regarding the non-English posting, here's the deal. "English Only" applies to posts that show up in the public timelines. I don't know how much you've had a chance to play around with posting permissions, but there's (probably) a globe on the toolbar right below where you type. If you click that there's a couple different options. Public, Unlisted, Followers-Only, and Direct. The "English Only" rule only applies to Public posts. Any language you choose can be used for the rest.

       @mike thanks for the explanation here. I'm still trying to wrap my head around these multiple servers.  If I answer someone from a different server, using my Fosstodon account, is my reply linked to the Fosstodon CoC or the other server's ? It would make sense that it be the Fosstodon CoC but that makes it real hard to stop myself from answering in French if the original post was in French.  Ah! Newbie questions....

       @Cleoqc I agree, that would be really hard, which is why our CoC doesn't require that. Ultimately, if you're on Fosstodon then it's our CoC that you most have to worry about. About the only time the "English Only" comes into play is when you're creating a new post that's going to be published to the local timeline. Replies or DMs or non-public posts don't require English. That being said, that's about the only part of the CoC that DOESN'T apply all the time.
