HOWDY! I need suggestions for the best Audio Production software for linux. MIDI, beats, recording, multi-tracking, mixing, etc. etc. I'm trying to avoid sticking a windows box in my recording studio. Can you help me?

@ajroach42 Harrison Mixbus is a commercial product derived from ardour code which is amazing. I use both ardour and mixbus.

Specifically looking for suggestions from people who Use Linux for Making Music. If you do other kinds of audio recording, you're going to suggest Audacity and that's fine but insufficient for my needs at this time.

@ajroach42 Doing a deep dive on JACK routing will serve you well on your (GNU+)Linux musical journey. Cadence, Claudia, and Catia from the kx.studio repository are my current preferred JACK front ends. For cooking up phat beets, I quite enjoy Hydrogen. The dev team is responsive on their GitHub issues & discussions, too.

@Ricardus I have a 24 track recorder, and an okay mixing console, but *eventually* someone is going to insist on a DAW. Don't get me wrong, I'm drooling, but I don't need it yet.

@ajroach42 They'd be better off working with tape before they get near a DAW. They'll learn a LOT more. Like track discipline. You don't need to waste 6 tracks recording one guitar part, etc...

@ajroach42 @Ricardus Have both, and find a way to sync the tape machine with whatever DAW. So you have however many tracks your computer can handle in software, plus 24 extra.

@ToroidalCore @ajroach42 Having a DAW chase SMPTE on a tape machine is no problem. The point is people get lazy working on DAWs and release shit. Tape will force them to think and learn.

@Ricardus @ajroach42 Good point. For that matter, mastering for vinyl will as well.(I just couldn't resist imagining constructing a Rube Goldberg machine of some sort.)

@ToroidalCore @ajroach42 Mastering vinyl is its own black art. I have a friend who did it for years. There is MUCH to learn there. MUCH.

@Ricardus I mean, I cut my teeth on DAT, not 2" tape, but the concept was the same. But I'm not building the studio for myself, you know? I'm not going to be the mixing engineer most of the time, and when I am, I'll do it the way I've always done it. But, if someone is sitting in for a session, I won't begrudge them their MIDI and VST.

@ToroidalCore @Ricardus I'm guessing you're saying this as if it's a joke because you missed the rest of this project: https://mountaintown.video/videos/watch/09d33329-f70b-4a6b-946e-4262a0a44973Granted, that audio sounds like garbage but it was one of our first test cuts, it hadn't been mastered at all (other than applying a reverse RIAA) and it's cut in to a polycarb disc for immediate playback. I've done cuts since then that sound much better, and we'll be cutting lacquers and making stampers soon enough.

@Ricardus @ToroidalCore Yeah... I've been talking to a mastering engineer who worked out of nashville back in the late 70s, and I feel like I just need to record every conversation we have. So much secret knowledge.

@Ricardus When we get the duplication process hammered out, I would love to have someone who knows what they're doing sit in and teach me the right way to do this stuff.

@Ricardus I still have this tab open. I just sent a link to my buddy that's helping me set up the studio, and he responded with "Please?" Hard to say no to that.

@ajroach42 LMMS is pretty great for initial composition, Ardour is a bit complicated, but it's a brilliant open source audio production system.

Also  Rosegarden. Roughly in the same league as Ardour, but with a couple of features that set it apart in my view.  The Quantize function beats Ardour's hands down, so you can record when you're drunk and sloppy and fix it all in seconds. Works exactly like it does in Cakewalk/Sonar (Windows based audio workstations I used long ago).  It also has excellent integration with music notation so you can publish written scores for your jams with zero effort.
