Something I've been seeing a lot lately is people grasping at straws, hoping to be on board the next great cash cow. Bitcoin. Dogecoin. The gamestop stock bubble.Someone helped me to understand the folly of shitting on cryptocurrency as a utility, but I finally figured out what it was about this and other things that I hate so much.They're aspects of a failing and collapsing system, and they tell us that if we can just hop on the right train at just the right time, we could make it rich.If you bought gamestop stock last year, that you'd be a multimillionaire. If you'd bought into bitcoin ten years ago you'd be a multibillionaire. If you Bought into dogecoin 5 months ago you'd have tens of thousands of dollars.It's all bullshit.Trying to buckle yourself to one of any number of potential get-rich-quick schemes will result in failure and misery in all except a statistically insignificant number of cases.It's alluring though. It's as alluring as the lottery sign on the corner store telling you that the lottery jackpot is in the hundreds of millions of dollars.It's as alluring as that pyramid scheme that promises you your money back tenfold if you just get 10 of your closest friends to buy into this miraculous business plan.It's capitalism's last gasp for those of us at the bottom.The answer isn't to grasp ever more tightly to its vestiges, hoping that we grab just the right rope that pulls us up into the skyBecause you aren't the one that's going to be lucky enough to grab onto that right rope. You're going to grab onto one of the many ropes that pull you down to the deepest pits even faster.The solution is to work together to build a world where we aren't all left behind.Because even if you hit that jackpot, all you've done is entrench yourself further in the grip of capitalism. The lotteries don't save anyone. They doom us all by getting us to hope for lies to be true.

@AnarkatThere are more reasons to be into crypto than a desire to get rich. For example, building a monetary system (and other kinds of system) that is not controlled by a few or one.Same with GameStop. You had many people buying it who didn't care if they lost money, they just wanted to stick it to the man. Whether it was on the whole a good idea or not is another matter.

@Anarkat @Hyolobrika well, your premise is wrong. you don't need to get in on crypto early. if crypto hits mass adoption then TPTB won't be able to print your savings away and devalue the currency. that alone is enough to make you rich, you would just have to work for a couple years and live off the deflation instead of the current rat race situation. then there's the inability to easily tax, as transactions (with a proper coin, not a scam like bitcoin) are fungible and private.

@ew @Anarkat What coin do you recommend I buy btw? I'm looking for something that a) doesn't waste energy, i.e. does not use Proof-of-Work, b) is private, c) is reasonably well accepted (as crypto goes).

@Hyolobrika @Anarkat I don't speculate, I just see a lot of garbage about cryptocoins and don't even like crypto beyond it's utility as a currency to be honest. monero and mochimo are the only things that look useful right now to me, for what it's worth.

@Hyolobrika @Anarkat might the be colloquial form of proprietary, as in they made the algorithm themselves, not that it is proprietorially licensed. it's been awhile since I looked at it.
