They need the PR Mozilla produces, and the fig leaf of "supporting" open source software.If Mozilla does produce anything of value, like a new feature or new design paradigm, Google can just incorporate it into their own products. Or not; they have no obligation to use or buy anything. Google could just let Mozilla waste the time and man hours going down some alternate path that doesn't work out, turn it into a nice case study write-up for internal training.Alternatively, you could think of Mozilla as a honeypot for idealists who might otherwise form startups that challenge Google. I don't think they are really scared of competitors any more, but it's always good to have a safe spot to dump reactionaries and let them stagnate.It's a pretty good scam, actually.

Forcing social reform only makes a company loose respect by subjecting it's users to it. Which is why when a company does that, I prefer that people start and attempt to find other products to use instead. It can't be good, so it's better to rebel and tell companies, "No." People do not want their freedom of speech censored. Yeah, I've learned that pretty much anything 1-2 degrees of separation from the Open Societies Foundation or ADL is generally not worth the paper it's printed on. This one read like a survey paper of federated technologies that an undergrad would write, combined with a ton of agenda-pushing.
