Can someone who prefers #Matrix over #XMPP please explain to me why you prefer Matrix?

@MutoShack I have often wondered this. Maybe it's a timing thing, XMMP has been around for longer and probably came out without the fan fair seen by Matrix.

@stunderI might well be talking out of my arse, as usual, but as I understand, there is basically:* One mainstream / reference #matrix client* Likewise, one reference server implementation* One mainstream server instance that everyone federates withAs a result, it *looks* much like the silos that the last generation of users have grown up with, so more familiar than the #email-like #XMPP approach and ecosystem.NB: casual outside observer, never used Matrix.@MutoShack

@0 Maybe we've seen different #xmpp ecosystem but there was nothing like email there it was impossible to chat with Bob@server1 if you were Joe@server2. Not technical problem probably, just no one actually did it.@stunder @MutoShack@functional.cafe

@stunder Pretty sure, yeah there were icq-jabber gateways but federation between different servers definetely was opt-in.@0

@stunderIt didn't take long for the silly valley VCs to decide they'd be better off silo-ing people though! There are noises in #Brussels about forcing big tech to #federate so we may end up going full circle once again on this. And the situation is not entirely unlike the grip #Microsoft had on personal computers back in the #90s. They did their best to resist the popularity of the internet, like not shipping a #TCP/#IP stack for years and later forcing a really crappy browser.@nesc

@nesc> federation between different servers definetely was opt-in.Still is. I ran corporate internal #XMPP systems that you didn't *want* federating with the internet at large. Either non-federated or whitelisted hosts only. Those were not consumer systems though. And the same applies to #Mastodon (I liberally block entire instances), #Usenet (#killfile) and #email (#Spamhaus & al.) Federation does not mean free for all.@stunder

@0 @nesc that was what I remember too. It is for sure an opt-in type protocol. I started doing a little bit of work with XMPP on a VoIP project I was working on last year, but didn't go deep down the rabbit hole again.

@0 Yeah spamhaus and cronies are the worst thing that hapenned to emails after gmail.I do understand value of blacklisting just at the time I've seen it there was not a lot of federation. Still problem of basic chat features being suggestions and not mandatory made things worse.@stunder

@nesc> Still problem of basic chat features being suggestions and not mandatory made things worse.Yeah, it's like sending attachments via email. Having to run them through #uuencode is a pain in the arse, and God knows how good your recipient's #MIME support is going to be, if any at all.(If we're in the subject of recycling complaints from twenty years ago, count me in. 😁)@stunder

@0 Wanted to say that I haven't seen anything related to xmpp in ten years. Then remembered there was this time with me being administrator of openfire installtion of 500 users for a few months.@stunder

@nesc @0 from what I can tell it's very alive in the VoIP world. I have some friends that work with it daily.

@nescSo how's #OpenFire compare to #ejabberd? I only have experience with the latter (I'm very pleased with it, despite not being an #Erlang programmer).@stunder
