I've met several people who had the same rules, and we had the best friendships or encounters of our lives.What I do is LISTEN. I don't ask.It's up to the other persona to volunteer information. If they never do, that means they don't want to.When someone understands that you GET THEM, they relax, and you have the interactions that so many people crave in their lives.It's about respecting boundaries.

I was accused of being hateful once because I listen to Rush (and have done so since 1990). She said the fact I cannot hear his hatefulness made me worse than him. I quit that forum that day. I already knew the context of my upbringing, but I wanted to know how to STOP making the same terrible choices.The therapy was about MY OWN DECISIONS and why I found it rewarding to be a failure and a target.I told the therapist that I wanted to leave every session bathed in sweat.Hardest thing I've ever done, but it was necessary.
