that Nexus 7 tablet has borderline turned me into an anti e-waste evangelist. It's a perfectly fine tablet it just doesn't get any fucking updates so it can't run anything anymore./

@Moon My tablets tend to get used up as smart home control panels or mounted to my 3D printers as UI

@Moon set it up as an airgapped digital image frame or something showing off images you find either aesthetic or meaningful?

@Moon i bought the first nexus 7 they made, it was quite nice, but i spent all the time with laptop anyway, so i gave it to a bf and it became basically unusable with the next few android upgrades it got

@normandy @orekix postmarketos has an update to 2019 but reports indicate almost nothing works right.

@Moon @orekix Even postmarketOS isn't a good bet because they're dropping support for whichever arm architecture was used around 2012-2013. I would say very stripped ROM and mount it in your kitchen and use it as a grocery list or Netflix device. Been debating that fate for one of my tablets.

@Moon yes but it was still silly to see a device that was ok on the release to be made really really crappy

@Moon The Nexus 7 used to be the gold standard for open tablets. Every weird project and OS would target it before any other tablet. See if you can get LineageOS, Ubuntu Touch or PostmarketOS running on it.

@bkhan ubuntu touch 16.04 runs on it but I've found it to be unreliable. You're supposed to be able to run "legacy desktop" software on it using containers, but it just plain doesn't work.

@Moon Ubuntu Touch was made for mobile more than productivity. The closest thing to mainline Linux on tablets would be PostmarketOS. It's based off Alpine and targets Gingerbread-era phones, so a Nexus 7 should work.

@MoonI've got an old kindle hd 7 that I feel the same way about. I could replace the battery, but Amazon crippled it with a shitty oddball bootloader.

@Moon I have a Nexus 7 from 2012, which was absolutely ruined by Google updating it to Android 5. It became absolutely unusable and I never thought they would pull something like that.Anyways, the 2013 model might fare better in that regard, and even if not, there are surely CFW's for it.I'd just ist it as a Manga reading device with Perfect Reader. I'm sure it supports even older Android versions, but even if it doesn't, it should work for the next 10-15 years normally.

@Moon @bkhan yeah, the libertine containers don't seem supported very well. I tried it recently on FP2 and had the same problem.
