@Fullycaffeinated @DollyCat I just googled one of my old deleted spinster accounts and found some posts on a very strange fediverse instance. Not many posts, but it was still very weird. I think we all should only post things we wouldn't be too bothered about seeing anywhere on the net. Assume that anyone can see your posts and that they could be there forever.

There should be an option to deactivate the mirroring on other sites. I know that Spinster is not a "safe space", but I think it shouldn't be THAT chaotic and uncontrollable. It's sad that women are leaving because of this (even if I'm able to understand them).@mk@rose @Fullycaffeinated @DollyCat

@Fullycaffeinated @Ladyfat @DollyCat Same thing. Spinster sends a deletion request to the other servers automatically. It's up to the software of the other server to delete it. If it doesn't, it could be because:1. The message got dropped in transit. Think like a lost package.2. There's a bug in the software of the remote server.3. The server administrator configured the server to reject deletion requests, either maliciously or for ideological reasons (this is not likely).Keep in mind that there are dozens of researchers/archivers scraping Spinster and other social media sites at all times. The only difference is that here you can see it. There is definitely a complete archive of all posts ever made that exists somewhere. The exact same thing is happening on Twitter.

So it's perfectly possible for a server to have your post, but your server not knowing about it and thus doesn't sent a delete request to that server. If you go to your preferences, there's an option to opt out of search engine indexing, which will stop Google from seeing your profile on Spinster. If you make public posts, they might get copied to other servers which, due to running older or different software, might not block Google correctly, so Google might find your posts there. This has reminded me of a story from when I lived in Murica, a million years ago (San Fran).My mate Paddy worked for a Mexican guy who had a removals company.One of the candidates running in an election at the time was proposing to 'build a wall" on the border (nothing new under the sun, is there?)So Paddy's boss decides to call this candidate's campaign, and promise a decent donation - on the proviso that he gets to talk to the candidate.They set it up. It's super easy. Cook your steak (preferably in a cast-iron pan), make a roux with the drippings (in same pan, add butter/oil if needed), deglaze with red wine and add stock/water as needed. Adjust seasonings, thicken as desired and then serve on the steak. It's really good. Rule of thumb when cooking with any alcohol: if it's not good enough to drink, don't cook with it either. Have been on the internet since before Compu-serve and AOL ruled the earth so knowing that anything online can be archived and seen is not new news to me. But since I don't say anything online that I am not fully happy with other people seeing (whether they are happy about seeing it is THEIR problem) I am fine with that. If you follow my neenster account, or I follow yours from there, I can see your posts on neenster, because that's how the Fediverse works. Any time you follow or are followed by or interact with an account on another server, your posts show up on that server. There's more neenster-Spinster crossover than other servers (although my Spinster account interacts with a lot of dobbs.town and other servers) which is why you may notice it.

@DollyCat As caff has said the mirroring happens in quite a few places not just neenster I am unsure if amendments or deleted posts and or accounts are mirrored elsewhere, like you say you can deal with the googling issue quite easily but I’m unsure how to stop any mirroring sorry not much help. If you make a public post on here, it's best to assume it's on the internet forever. Twitter makes public tweets available to everyone on Twitter using a network of servers that all follow Twitter's rules because Twitter owns all of them. The Fediverse makes public posts available to everyone on the Fediverse using a network of around 5000 servers which follow some rules called ActivityPub. Some of those servers follow the rules better than others, depending on the software they use or the competence, incompetence or possible malice of the 5000 different people who own and run them.When you make a public post on Spinster, according to the ActivityPub rules, Spinster will transfer it to other servers for your followers on those servers, and it may send it to other servers who have even just one user who follows anyone on Spinster, to populate their Fediverse feeds, in the same way as Spinster's Fediverse feed collects public posts from other servers.When you delete a public post, Spinster will send a message to the other servers to ask them to delete it as well, but whether that request is obeyed is not under Spinster's control.If you don't want your posts to possibly reach people in the far corners of the Fediverse, you can set them to followers-only using the globe icon at the bottom of the window where you write your post, and then they will only go to the servers of the people in your followers list.
