the most common cause for fatal accidents of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists is motorists not watching where they're driving (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/SMIDSY) and not yielding where they shouldwhat is the best thing to do about this?a) build intersections in a way that forces cars to do a 90° turn before crossing a cyclepath or crosswalk (pretty common in nl)b) seperate traffic light cycles for motorised and human-powered traffic (also common in nl)c) force motorcyclists and sometimes pedestrians to use the same path as cyclists (somewhat common in nl and belgium, sadly, even in cities)d) do nothing at all, don't even fine people who park too close to intersections or crosswalks, or on cyclepaths and footpaths, let alone tow them (common in germany)e) randomly unify cyclepaths and footpaths or merge the cyclepath with the rightmost lane right before an intersection, and/or make cyclists and pedestrians go through three traffic lights where motorised vehicles go through one, also don't fine or tow cars that park directly before that merge, or even on it (also common in germany)

another common cause of death for cyclists is riding into car doors that suddenly open before themit's hard to spot people in parking cars, especially from behind, and especially at 20 km/h which is roughly one car length per secondwhat's to do about that?a) separate parking lane and cyclepath (with enough distance or a fence) so this cannot happenb) teach drivers (and passengers) to use the dutch reach, that is, opening a left door with the right hand and vice-versa, forcing them to turn around and hopefully spot any cyclists approachingc) do absolutely nothing at all, only teach cyclists to keep their distance to stopped cars, which might net them honking concerts and threats when on the road, and just be plain impossible on tiny crappy cyclepaths; also if it does happen anyway assign part of the blame to the victim not keeping their distance, not wearing a helmet, or whatever. absolutely do not prosecute the driver or passenger (common in germany, unsurprisingly)

@lis Is it motorists not watching where they’re driving? Or is it cyclists riding where they shouldn’t? Anecdotally I’ve found a lot of them doing the latter when I was driving a car.I’m mostly a cyclist myself though, and some cars act plain dangerous.

@aeolun define “cyclists riding where they should”. in germany, cyclists are allowed to ride on any road (and often don't have another choice), except on autobahns, autobahn-like roads, and when there's a cyclepath that is mandatory to use (marked with a blue sign) and not obstructed by ice, construction works, etc

@lis d) teach cyclists how to spot when someone might open a door on them.We had this problem when I was a bus driver too except a bus will just take off the door and potentially kill the person in the car. They taught us to look through the rear window to try and predict if someone might open a door without looking.

@hunter > teach cyclists how to spot when someone might open a door on themhave you ever fucking cycled in traffic yourself!? are you seriously asking cyclists to dedicate a huge amount of cognitive load towards scanning cars, look if there's someone in there, and try and predict whether they might fling a door in your face!? and on the off chance that they predict this correctly and react in time (this has to happen in less than a second), then what? evading into traffic might get you run over by someone else; braking won't be sufficient at that point, assuming a usual speed of 15—25 km/hif this actually works, then why do experienced cyclists opt for keeping their distance at all costs? even if they risk confrontation with drivers in traffic that way? because it fucking doesn't, this is victim blaming, and if you actually believe this works you can go fuck yourself

@lis You're a retard. I was doing this as a bus driver at significantly higher speeds. If you're only looking 1 second ahead then you get what you deserve. Cyclists are suicidal retards who refuse to accept any blame for their idiocy. Kiss my ass
