yall do you realize even if the fediverse had 10 million users we would still be a fucking blip on the radar of the capitalist giants? I think this model we have so far can grow 10x without it falling apart that much. There is a lot of room for the fediverse to grow in a lot of directions that are not twitter related.

@liaizon I was thinking about this kind of thing, and like, I don't think growth should be a goalLike, I keep thinking "I want more people", and then I realise that's not what I mean. What I want are more of the people I love and care about

@gaeel thats a hard line to make, the people I have met here are not the people I cared about when I got here. I think I believe in the power of connections in general. I want the power of these random connections we can make to exist beyond a bunch of “tech elites” and the only way Incan see that happening is if I certain amount of “normal” people feel they can be here too.

@liaizon Right, but the more we look like "the next big thing", the more we'll draw attention from corporations and advertisersBy slowly building educated communities, we get a head start, and we develop a culture where when those advertisers show up, the residents will refuse them

@gaeel we are in the 11th year of the fediverse. we have been growing slowing this whole time. there can be growth that is slow and non destructive. I dont care about it being “the next big thing” for the sake of popularity. But I want it to welcome the grandmas and the dishwashers and the plumbers of the world. This recent “explosion” being centered on #india is the exact type of growth I can get behind.

There are millions of people who are just trying to speak their truth to the world and right now their voice is getting silenced by the algorithms that only care about vitality and conflict to sell doodads and plastic trash.
