do we need a physical switch for wifi on the Reform? why is software RFKILL not enough?

@mntmn I think it's a matter of trust and simplicity. A switch may save you even in a situation where malware is messing with your ability to disable wifi. You could also flick the switch blindly in the dark in a panic situation.

@mntmn Even if your OS obeys RFKILL, and stops using WiFi in any shape or form, if the wifi chipset is powered, it can still do nasty stuff. With a physical switch, it gets unpowered, nothing it can do then. This is assuming you do the unpowering within the Reform, and not rely on the wifi chipset to have hardware buttons. If the physical switch would just dispatch to the chipsets one, that's no different than software RFKILL.

@algernon @mntmn AFAIK even rfkill from OS level is supposed to cut the power to the wireless modem (or keep it in reset, or sth), it's just that you need to trust the OS and motherboard to do this properly.

@Wolf480pl @mntmn My understanding is that such cut of power relies on the wifi chipset having hardware buttons, and actually obeying the rfkill request. If you rely on the motherboard, then you might aswell bridge it out to the user to have a physical switch.

thanks for your replies. i did it like this now: the keyboard can control the PCIe 1 power directly via the LPC11U24 microcontroller that is responsible for power and batteries. so you can press Hyper + P for example to toggle it and get feedback on the keyboard OLED. this won't need any support of the main CPU / it's bypassed.

@mntmn I'd find a physical switch for the camera and microphone more useful.

@mhoye same, but there is no camera and no microphone.

@mntmn I feel like a physical switch is a real "nothing up my sleeve" thing
