Does anyone know of a good FOSS alternative to Scrivener? I've heard Scrivener itself is a great tool for writers that are concerned about managing multiple chapters and narratives, but I was curious about whether there were any good alternatives out there.

@sean not really an "alternative" per se, but I write in asciidoc (which means I can do arbitrary file includes to organize chapters) and a notes application (currently boostnote, wishing for something better (with asciidoc support)) to keep all the notes in.

From what I can tell so far, there's:* Manuskript* Plume Creator* BibiscoSo far, I'm not super impressed. All of these projects are young, undersupported, and don't have great UIs.Maybe it's worth exploring some kind of browser-based solution...

@sean @kai I saw a suggestion a while back to use the #alternatives tag for this kind of question. It worked for me a couple of times so I'm adding it for you here: #alternatives

@sean I am curious as well. Several years ago I read about a program like this, could never remember the name, then wasn't able to find it when I went looking. I actually think scrivener might be the program I read about years ago. So at least, thanks for giving me that name.

@sean I believe FOSS oldsters would shout "EMACS org mode" here while shaking their canes at you.Though I was more of a Vim sort so I don't actually know if it's good advice, just that it's common advice.

@sean I honestly haven't found anything that scratches that Scrivener itch. A good Web based one is novlr but it's not cheap. If you sign up through NanoWriMo, you can get 40% off a year.

@gray yeah, I figured as much. Unfortunately, they haven't maintained a native Linux version in a long time.I'm currently using Manuskript and, despite my mild distaste towards KDE applications and the lack of a mature codebase, it's still pretty good. A lot of it is centered around the process of developing characters, locations, and narratives. At the very least, it's helping me flesh out the different stages of what should happen in the story, while thinking about what else might be happening in the background.
