@redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike Something along the lines of case law stating police (and I would assume armed security guards) aren't responsible for one's safety...you are?Last sentence is the stupidest: "Their lawsuit does not say whether they are seeking any monetary damages."Duh.

@redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike 1. This might end up being a short thread. So, I know a woman whose sons are both police officers in EP. They were sent into the Walmart in the immediate aftermath to clear the area of any more threats. The older son has been a policeman for his whole career. The younger son had been with the Special Forces in Afghanistan for several deployments as a Marine and came home with PTSD, got help, and eventually became a police officer here.

@redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike 2. When they entered the building, the carnage was mostly in the front area. The cash registers, the bank, the food court, the customer service area were all blood soaked, with splatter everywhere. The bastard shot everybody he could in the head. As they were clearing the space, the older son heard a sound coming from a body directly in front of him. He looked at the victim, and she was clearly dead, as her brains had been blown out.

@redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike 3. He watched for a moment more, and thought he saw movement under her body. Startled, he waited, and realized that something was moving underneath, and it was a tiny foot. When he recognized that it belonged to a baby, he broke protocol (you are not allowed to bring anyone else on the scene until it has been cleared) and called for a paramedic. You can all guess what happened next. They rolled over the body and discovered a living baby.

@redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike 4. The baby, as we all know now, lived, with only broken fingers. The parents died, probably trying to save their son. The baby is now going to be raised by his uncle, and this was the family that made it a point to go to the hospital when Trump visited to meet him, and support him. The mother of the two police officers asked the son with PTSD if his PTSD was triggered by the incident, and he said:

@redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike 5. "No mom, in Afghanistan, they were all trying to kill me. This was nothing like it. Here, I was the good guy." His mom told us that they had to destroy the uniforms they were wearing, because they were so soaked in blood and, well, guts and brains, that they would never be able to get the stains out. Apparently, the killer had no idea murder would be so graphic. He didn't stop because he ran out of ammunition. He stopped because he couldn't stop vomiting.

@redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike 6. He left voluntarily, got into his car, and drove until he saw the first policeman. This policeman was stopping every car on the road leaving the shopping center. The killer saw him, got out of the car, and said "I'm the guy that did this" or something close to that. No one in that Walmart was carrying. They should have been. We are deciding exactly what guns we want to buy, now.

We really are "El Paso Strong." Khalid, the singer, who found his voice in El Paso, did a concert here last night, with all proceeds going to the victims and their families.

My personal take is that he played a lot of violent video games that inured him to the violence because it is so fake. I am sure there will be many people who disagree with me.

@trueblueTEX @redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike 1. I actually had to laugh at that comment. As a fellow in Obstetric Anesthesia, we had to do a C-Section on a patient with a condition called "pre-Achalasia." Achalasia is a condition where your esophageal sphincter does not work, (that is the valve that keeps your stomach content in your stomach and keeps it from going into your esophagus), so you have a HUGE risk of aspiration when you fall asleep during Anesthesia.

@trueblueTEX @redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike 2. The reason you are told not to eat or drink before an operation is to empty your stomach before surgery to assuage this particular risk. It is WAY WORSE in pregnant woman for multiple reasons, but mostly because your gravid (pregnant) belly pushes your intestines up and makes makes it easier to aspirate. (The stomach contents get into your lungs and can kill you from the acid and the blockage of your pulmonary alveoli, or sacs.)

@trueblueTEX @redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike 3. So, one day, we had a patient with pre-Achalasia who HAD to have a general anesthetic (had to go to sleep for it, as opposed to a spinal or epidural, which is the anesthetic of choice on a pregnant patient). We do a maneuver called "cricoid pressure', where we literally push the trachea down onto the esophagus to stop any stomach contents from coming up as the mom is falling asleep, quickly put a tube into the trachea to protect it (intubation)

@Sarah_Roberts @trueblueTEX @redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike She hadn't eaten since the night before. I should have explained it better. In achalasia, our intestines have a problem with peristalsis, the involuntary muscle process that pushes food through our esophagus, stomach and intestines to allow us to digest and eliminate everything we eat. When you lose your ability to do this, everything you eat stays where it is, partially digested, and it is easy to reflux into your esophagus.

@Sarah_Roberts @trueblueTEX @redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike The problem is not the sphincter, the problem is the lack of peristalsis. I do not know what happened to her afterwards, or how and if they were able to treat it. I DO know she became a mom and had a healthy baby. THAT was my goal at the time, and I met it when my experienced Attending and Nurse Anesthetist could not. This was many years ago.

There were not enough ambulances to take everyone to hospitals. So, while the ambulances that were there took the most critical to the hospitals, El Pasoans who were there loaded up their personal cars and took those less critical to the hospital in their cars. I am so proud of this city.

@wziminer @Sarah_Roberts @trueblueTEX @redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike OMG! That is thebest/worst story I have heard in a long time! I have a question though. Was it a temporary affliction? If it wasn't how could she survive if her body didn't digest the food? Why would you eat more if it was all just sitting there undigested?

@Krissy_Caster70 @Sarah_Roberts @wziminer This may sounds crazy, Krissy, but does your son like to sing?Vocal exercises/singing can help a person modify esophageal issues, gaining some control over dysfunction.I used to have esophageal spasms & motility issues & was a candidate for dilation but these issues have resolved. Breathing/vocal exercises, & choosing increasingly difficult songs to sing at greater volume gave me greater control of accessory muscles. It helped enormously.

@MaggieMoore Oh, not crazy at all. What you say is true. He is on inhibitors and blockers. He also has nonverbal autism. He is learning to chew his food safely into a bolus and swallow. The LES will be the only issue. @Sarah_Roberts @wziminer

@MaggieMoore @Krissy_Caster70 @Sarah_Roberts That's fascinating, Maggie. I trained for the Opera for years, and I would never have even thought of it. But it makes total sense. Wow. You just taught me something.

@Krissy_Caster70 Thank you so much for sharing, Krissy. Your sons are beautiful. This case was in 1994, so I am glad to hear there are treatments available and that your son is doing so well. Your sons are beautiful, by the way. @Sarah_Roberts @trueblueTEX @redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike

@wziminer Thank you! You would never know the issues the brothers have. I am indeed blessed. Although from 1994, treatment is still hard to come by especially finding a competent feeding/swallowing specialists in these delicate areas to ensure a safe quality of life.@Sarah_Roberts @trueblueTEX @redwhitebluedude @drawandstrike

@wziminer @Krissy_Caster70 @Sarah_Roberts It was an accidental epiphany.I was so furious at being ill, I needed to get it out of my system. So, while on the elliptical, I’d blast music, close my windows (didn’t want to frighten the neighbors) & sing until I was exhausted. Over time, I realized I could control the esophageal spasms by singing. Eventually the diaphragm & accessory muscles were strengthened, which helped breathing and esophageal issues.
