1. President Trump's tweet about Notre Dame included firefighting advice that may be incorrect and will certainly seem to those affected an inappropriate thing to say. He has done the same thing many times before. Sometimes it annoys me bc it seems to be a forced error, an own-goal. Various theories have been suggested to try and explain why he does it.

2. Newly chastened, I'm not gonna sign up today to any of the theories about Trump's tweeting style. I'll just report on them. One theory is that he does it to deflect onto his big shoulders the angst that people naturally feel during a crisis. Sometimes this is a good idea, but I cannot see how it would be so in this situation.

3. Before starting this thread (which people should wait until the end before commenting on, because the reason I need a thread is bc I can't cover the whole issue in one toot), I was aware of how Trump's tweet had been received by qualified and experienced firefighters. This thread is about questioning the possible reasons, not jumping to conclusions. I learn more by asking questions than I do by making statements. Pretty sure you would too.

4. The French authorities have said: "hundreds of firemen of the Paris Fire Brigade are doing everything they can to bring the terrible #NotreDame fire under control. All means are being used, except for water-bombing aircrafts which, if used, could lead to the collapse of the entire structure of the cathedral." And it would risk lives on the ground, too. 5. Here are some of the comments I've seen about Trump's tweet: "I took it as words of angst , at the thought of rapidly losing such an historic structure. 🤷♀️" "He was just making a comment and a possible solution and advised they move quickly. Just accept words for what they are. The real conundrum is why didn't anyone respond to the fire for two hours?" The second comment is not based on any known facts at this time, and when I read it I felt pretty irritated.

6. Now, I had made a mistake two hours ago by implying that the fire was likely deliberately started by a terrorist. Boy am I paying the price for that. It's OK, I've developed big shoulders over time, too, and I (evidently) needed a reminder of the great #FudgeRule. If you don't learn from the mistakes of others, life will keep giving you further learning opportunities, that come with a personal price, I've found.

@GodlessNZ He didn't offer firefighting advice.Like a lot of us, he wondered if aircraft could be used. The French have small helicopters equipped with buckets. Although the French say that such aircraft can't be used, the French also have a long history of not telling the truth when their first responders dawdle. It took three hours for the cops to end the Bataclan massacre.Trump's tweet is entirely reasonable. It doesn't require an entire thread to dissect it.

@ThomasWic @GodlessNZ Trump is a builder. It is an inherent part of who he is. It only took me a movement to realize how deep his emotions lie with the loss of all that encompasses the Notre Dame. https://twitter.com/abc/status/1117862365075140608?s=21

@ShellsandBells @GodlessNZ Trump ALSO KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT.He's dealt with burning buildings many times.Have we all forgotten that he's a COMMERCIAL REAL-ESTATE DEVELOPER?"He says stupid things."Except that fires in large structures are part of his expertise.

7. "He was just making a comment" A president always needs to take extra care when he or she tweets, especially during a crisis like the Notre Dame fire. "and a possible solution" POTUS (who I adore) has a history of offering ideas during crises and they don't always turn out well for him. "and advised they move quickly." If you were neck deep in managing a crisis, how would you feel about unsolicited advice from those outside your profession?

8. "Just accept words for what they are." This is just laughable, and was thrown at me after the first two tweets of this thread, which had specifically framed the following toots as a lengthy analysis of the situation. This thread is precisely about NOT stopping at thinking about the face value of words, when they are said by a POTUS during what will be seen by history as a dark day for France, a key ally. POTUS and the rest of us will be OK. But I can still analysis his actions.

9. This part was the kicker, though. "The real conundrum is why didn't anyone respond to the fire for two hours?" Ugh. This is ridiculousness. A slur on the first responders, and on the French people. I have seen no evidence, let alone hard evidence, of any avoidable delay in the firefighting response and I don't expect to see any when the investigation is complete, which is what we should all wait for. I do criticize the French government at times, and here is why:

10. I criticize those individuals in France who had the power to prepare better for WWII and to take different decisions once the German invasion began. I will never let those individuals off the hook. I lost a dear family member before I was born, because the war went on longer than it needed to. But I must stop myself from hating the French in general. That is the definition of racism and bigotry.

11. I'm a hawk, a conservative and I'm very tough on governments in any country that make decisions leading to mayhem, and on the voters who empower them. This has been happening in France for centuries. HOWEVER I strive to give them the benefit of the doubt every time, as I strive to do for everyone. I'm confident in this case that the firefighting response has been excellent. Either way, President Trump has not done himself or the US any favors by offering his suggestion.

12. So I still have the question, of why did he do it? Maybe he had some grand strategy in mind, maybe not. Occam's Razor is helpful here (look it up if you need to.) If he didn't have a grand strategic reason in mind when he waded in to professional firefighting techniques, implying the professionals needed his well-intended help in the middle of the crisis, then like me, perhaps he just made a mistake. It won't damage the work he is doing to make America great again. Because:

13. The work Trump is leading to make America great again has a sound basis in many years of work by conservative individuals, groups, think tanks and the GOP itself. As incredible as he is, this work is bigger than even him, in the scheme of things. One theory about his occasional tweets that get even me thinking tut-tut about them is that he panders to a certain faction within the movement. Gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.

14. My admittedly biased view of the French and the EU is mild compared to many in the Trump movement. (But at least I admit my bias, unlike our opponents.) It's hard for anyone to predict what level of EU-critique is going to be optimal for getting the best outcomes in 2020 and beyond. Trump knows that public opinion in the US and Europe is delicately poised and could lead to a whole lot of trouble, or not, depending on what he says and does. He is very smart and very savvy.

15. The loss of Notre Dame is a shock to all of us. I had a dry run of sorts through observing the partial loss of Windsor Castle in 1992 and the total loss of Brazil's National Museum in September 2018. I processed a lot of my feelings about fires in treasure houses then. It's only 31 days since NZ's 15/3 atrocity. I'm still reeling from that. 50 innocent lives taken in a matter of minutes. This is a time for grace and courage.

@ThomasWic @GodlessNZ @Bluecharger69 Thank you. Besides, this may have been a very accurate approach. The President communicates with his countrymen as their Leader. He is as anxious about the imminent destruction of such a treasure as any of us average Joe's. Seemed like a good suggestion to me; but it also signals to THE WORLD that our Leader is as touched by the event as are those singing Ave Maria on site.Leadership is more than technique.

16. Trump continually shows the depth of his own grace and courage. I put him alongside people like Churchill, Lincoln and Washington on that score. The challenge is to figure out which things require us to show the courage to change or the serenity to accept. I accept that construction accidents can happen. And I honor the courage of those who went into harm's way to reduce the losses of this "great fire" in history. Fire: Man's number one enemy since we began. END
