#Chernobyl’s cover-up is a warning for our nuclear futureBefore expanding #nuclear #power to combat #ClimateChange, we need answers to the global health effects of radioactivity, says nuclear historian Kate Brownhttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/apr/04/chernobyl-nuclear-power-climate-change-health-radioactivity

@tuxom The article really reads like the regular anti-nuclear propaganda. :(It mixes valid and factual points with bits of misinformation. Operates backwards from the conclusion."There are no studies" DOI: 10.21767/2254-6081-C5-018"Chernobyl nuclear explosion" there was a steam explosion and a hydrogen explosion, followed by a graphite fire (the moderator) which released the 137-Cs and Iodine into the atmosphere. There was no nuclear explosion...

@tuxom Thank you for this link! This is something which really bugs me, especially people like Bill Gates which promote the idea that our energy problems should be adressed by using more nuclear power plants...

@Ranunculus @tuxom No one is advocating for building more RBMK reactors (the one used in Chernobyl) and those are being phased out since a while, only operators left is Russia. The future of fission energy is most likely fast breeder reactors, which run on a closed fuel cycle, and can even burn up the spent fuel from today's reactors - that is known as high activity nuclear waste.

@uint8_t @tuxom which in theory sounds better, but the same was said about the first three generations of RBMK reactors. Better, safer, clean.I welcome the idea of "clean" energy, but am equally terrified about what would happen if we had "unlimited clean energy" available...

@Ranunculus Graphite moderated and water cooled reactor designs were known to be inherently unsafe in the west since the 1950s, but because of secrecy and such, USSR scaled it up to high power (like the RBMK-1000) which is a very different beast from the boiling water or pressurized water reactors found typically around the world. Those are still all Gen2.
