____ FRST Computer: batch 5 __________________________________________
Our earliest ESP32-based CyberTerminal concept computer is also now
availble for order. If you are interested in a microcontroller-based
personal computing device with a low-power ePaper display and built-in
LoRa radio, read on!
With focus shifting to Model Three development, the Model One/Two [1]
demo firmware has launguished in a state of incompletion...
Anyone interested in purchasing a Model Two needs to first understand
the current state of development for this project and (hopefully) be
willing and capable to contribute in this area. The current state:
- Zephyr-based demo, (4.x) with device tree config + drivers tested:
- Waveshare 4.2" ePaper display w/ framebuffer driver
- Semtech SX126x module
- WS2812-based screen-front-light
- Boots to FRST Logo splash screen and sends/receives test LoRa pkts
- UART-based CLI, providing low-level access to various Zephyr
facilities
## TODO:
- Trackpad support
- USB Host support (as in, there's not even keyboard support yet)
- PCD-68 Emulator ported to Zephyr
- Custom PCB w/ Mini-Din8 RS422 serial ports, IrDA port
- LocalTalk stack
- Inferno for PCD-68
- PalmOS Emulator
batch 5 Promise:
The promise I make for this first Model Two batch is a bit different
than the Model Three batch promise. While the Model Three is a
fully-functional personal computer, this Model Two remains a concept.
(and therefore priced accordingly -- a fancy/artsy devkit+enclosure?)
In the spirit of FRST Computer as a community art project, this
batch is offered up to those fellow tinkerers that want to pick up
the brush, so to speak, on this half-finished canvas.
Eventually, when all the TODOs are DONE, the Model Two could be a
unique, low-power, off-grid digital communications terminal, capable
of full participation in packet-radio smallnets. With the right
contributors, that might not even be a long way off! The above list
of TODOs is just a list of ambitious possibilities, but all of them
are feasible (yes, the ESP32 serial port peripherals support both
RS422 and IrDA -- w/ transceivers -- and the rest just requires the
will. ;) This batch exists to invite those that have that will -- to
join me and log some early commits on this crazy codebase / canvas.
We'll tackle these (and more) TODOs together and paint some happy
little trees along the way.
Model Two Cyberterminal -- $222.22
