Ive been playing with both binkp and emsi/zmodem mailer transfers, as well as 
http API to receive and send mail packets (you can choose which packet format 
to receive your mail in).

I've used this use case to play with some modern tech (cockroachdb, yugabyte, 
mongodb, rabbitmq) along the way just so I get some experience with those 
technologies that clients I deal with are using. I'm thinking of playing with 
kafka next.

Ive also seen some other great new projects being created for this little 
hobby, its good to see folks giving it a crack and not listening to the 
naysayers.
