that should get you to a modem at least. he also shows what he uses at 6:36 - a 
wifi232 modem

maybe they made another adapter for DB9 so you can connect it right to a *nix 
machine.. in that case you'd have to set up a 'getty' variant on the *nix 
machine to listen on the serial port for connections. bonus points if you have 
an old (or server) bios that dumps the bios output to the terminal during boot 
too

it's pretty neat stuff. i always imagine setting up a little terminal in the 
kitchen to show recipes and maybe peek at irc or email but it's a bit over the 
top :)
