and the important step was pressing "Shift-O" during the installation and 
setting autoPartitionOSDataSize to 8192. Did you do that?

Since you have an 8GB usb stick, you could pull out the 64 and install again 
just onto that stick (and no Shift-O) would be required then - but that stick 
would just be the OS boot.
