You may run into troubles running guests on the 1GB under ESXi - but on the 
8GB, it runs really well. (That said, I've only created 1 VM so far.)

I have an APU1D as well - not a powerful machine, but no VGA, so I use ESXi on 
it as well (runs opnsense for me) - the Pi is faster it seems.
