I have wondered about this recently too. I was going to use a combination of ufw and snort for intrusion detection as a firewall. I have an old laptop I can use, but an rpi should be good enough. I was thinking about using a USB etnhernet adapter to provide one of the interfaces for clarity of delineation. Just spitballing at this point.
