Not sure how well it would work on older hardware but have you considered
Mint? I ran that on a Core2Duo  which was acting as a base for Virtual box to
run 3 VM's of Windows 10 for 3 different BBS programs. It ran pretty well but
since I am not proficient enough with Linux I couldn't do anything with it so
I moved back to Windows..
