Well in theory that would be right - would I trust that a distro installer
wouldnt clobber the drive? (No).

That said, if you are doing a backup before you do an reinstall (which you are
right?) at least you'll have a recovery plan if things do go pear shaped...

The other problem you might have - is what if that distro needed more space
than the partition required?
