I've never actually tried to force a window size/location when I used gnome 
desktop, and that was a good few years back since I stopped using a DTE, but I 
imagine there will be a config file in your ~/.config directory somewhere that 
might help, I would say that there's probably an application to assist you 
also, but would probably try and do it without installing more apps to do it, 
just for the bloat perspective.

Interested in how you solve it, if you do manage it with gnome, something to 
store in the old grey memory banks for future.
