That's all pretty much as expected. The stock antenna is a bit of a dummy load on 2 metres, and 30 miles is a fair haul, unless the repeater is up really high. Similar situation here, where there's a local 70cm repeater a couple of miles away and the 2m repeater, which is about 25 miles away. The latter really needs a full sice antenna on it. I've successfully used the 2m repeater bicycle mobile, by using a mobile whip on the back of the bike. :) The 70cm repeater is so close that it comes in like a ton of bricks. I will be hard to catch. But if we make a morning sked (my time), we might be able to do something. Unfortunately, much of our common awake time is in my evening, which is "family time" for me, and not conducive to playing radio. Me> VK3JED That's normally my phone, I only fire it up when I'm actually using Echolink. Me> VK3JED-L This one is normally my PC, no RF. Have to keep it separate to my phone when testing. Also only on when actually being used. Me> VK3JED-R I suspect this is the one you connected to. It is an "experimental reflector" that some IRLP and any Echolink nodes can access. If you're using the right software, it's actually capable of full duplex (like a conference call) operation. IRLP (with tweaks) and maybe some Echolink third party software can do full duplex audio. I think you'll find it's the -R that you can connect to. I actually have to fix the repeater here, and either run it on a dummy load (or flea power), so I can access IRLP and Echolink directly on my private system. The callsign of this one on Echolink is VK3RTL-R. This system also has a remote base that can be fired up on 6m, 2m, 70cm and 23cm. Best performance is on 6m or 2m. 70cm has to use a suboptimal antenna (but I might swap antennas around, if I'm not going to run it as a full coverage repeater). 23cm has a quickly thrown together coaxial 1/4 wave, and is unlikely to get anyone other than me (if I can find my IC-T81A). :) Me> Anyway, be great to hear your voice on the radio waves of my local Me> repeater =) Making a sked is easier said than done, but we can try. :) ....
