I used to do it fairly often.  Excluding holiday/birthday cards, the last
letter I wrote may have been to a friend in the service, or to another friend
in Brazil.  So probably 25-30 years ago, before everyone got email and then
phones with text messaging.

Back during the Soviet era, I had a cousin stationed at the West German
border with East Germany.  I wrote to him pretty regular... as a youngster,
I was facinated by having a relative so close to the Iron Curtain.  ;)
