So, after restoring my BBS from a file backup, I looked into the proxmox built-in backup. I'd used it up until earlier this year when I switched to Proxmox Backup Service, and it looks like all of the metadata I need is in the backup. I selected the storage system, selected backup, selected the source, Proxmox picked a VM ID, and it restored the system very quickly. 

The built-in backup doesn't do the de-duping that Proxmox Backup Server does, but for a bare "virtual" metal restore, it's hard to beat.
