While I don't know all those buzzwords, I do connect to some 40column C64/C128 
BBSes and I work under Ubuntu mainly... I have a pretty good 'get syncterm' 
compiled under Ubuntu routine:

sudo apt install libsdl2-dev libsdl1.2-dev libncurses-dev libncursesw5-dev 
build-essential

wget http://syncterm.bbsdev.net/syncterm-src.tgz

tar xvzf syncter...
cd syncter.../src/syncterm
make SRC_ROOT=/home/blah/syncter.../src
sudo make install
which syncterm

This get me loaded in SDL mode, which for me runs all the terms I use; I 
*think* its fully supported after those prereq's. However, I'm still 
'intermediate' and if I sent you down a rabbit hole that doesn't work for ya, 
sorry. :P
