Some resources which may be useful to you:

First is a report of the newsgroups with the greatest numbers of posts,
which may help you find newsgroups with activity on them:

Second is a subreddit dedicated to Classic Usenet, but has a lot of users who 
would like to see more activity on modern Usenet:

Third, while you can of course find a BBS which carries newsgroups, you can get 





































































































































































































































































































































































































































a traditional and free account with which you can use a classic newsreader of 
your choice (Thunderbird works):

The short of it is, there is some legitimate activity on the text-only 
newsgroups but you may have to look a bit to find something of interest.  There 





































































































































































































































































































































































































































are also complete lunatics who, for reasons known only to them, still use 
Usenet to spew their insanity and/or hate.
