I think the moment that award shows lost relevancy for me was when Jack Valenti, then head of the MPAA, came out at the Academy awards to talk about how piracy was killing the movie industry. Kind of an ironic soapbox when you think about it. Valenti famously told a congressional panel in 1982, "I say to you that the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone."
