Is there some grand conspiracy among the world's elite to destroy countless lives and bring in the New World Order?

Is there actually any proof that these societies exist or had ever existed?  There is a conspiracy theory that goes along the premise that the secret societies that people are familiar with are actually sub-societies that answer to a greater umbrella society that deals on the world stage with malevolent intent.
